SITE REVIEW:
I
found this to be a completely refreshing, and exhilarating performance
of Messiah highlights, with bright, brisk tempi, stunning dynamic
flourishes, and exact unity from the choir. I had never
before
heard of the Canadian Tafelmusik Chamber
Orchestra and Choir,
(now known as the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Choir) or its
director, Ivars Taurins, but I'm very much impressed by this virtuoso
performance, and their command of the Baroque tradition.
Played
and sung with period instruments, this is an electrifying delivery of
all of the choruses, with select solo lead ins. I've read
other
reviews that seem very nitpicky about the soloists, but I found them
perfectly in keeping with the performance, and when you're purchasing a
disc like this, the soloists aren't the main attraction. The
choir and orchestra "pop" on such contrapuntal pieces as "Let Us Break
Their Bonds" which is one of most exciting interpretations I've ever
heard, and bring a fresh emphasis to the growing crescendos of the
"Hallelujah" chorus, and "Worthy Is The Lamb" A truly
refined,
fresh interpretation that's one of my favorites. Although the
highlights disc is out of print on CD as of this writing, a more
expansive recording (33 tracks) is available as a digital download.
