Hermann Max's 1991 Mozart arr. Der Messias
recording for EMI is another strong entry in the oeuvre of
German-language Messiahs,
with brisk, energetic tempos, extremely strong playing and singing from
the combined forces, and soloists who are uniformly excellent.
Max's tempos are generally very fast, noticable from the
opening Overture, which races along with a rapidity which at first I
found extreme, but Max continues his light, quick tempos throughout,
and I gradually became accustomed to them, with everything played and
sung at greater rates than is the norm, this Messiah sounds energized
and youthful. It still takes some getting used to, but in the
end, the enthusiasm and talent of the soloists, choir and orchestra
completely won
me over. Mozart's arrangement here sounds far less Teutonic than
in Mackerras's hands, and the bright
tempos benefit those moments when the
soloists take the choral roles, giving the quartets a sparkle and zip
that help distinguish Mozart's lighter re-arrangments from Handel's
own. Soloists are all around excellent - special mention must be given to
mezzo-soprano Mechthild Georg who sings with great passion and feeling
during her arias. And
the same must be
said for The Rheinische Kantorei, a sixteen-member chorus who sing
gloriously. The professionalism and talent on display,
as well as moments of glorious emotional connection, rate this Der Messias high in
my personal playlist.
