SITE RATING:  7/10
SITE REVIEW:  One of those anonymous recordings which gives little-to-none information about the artists involved, and seems to delight in the confusion caused by multiple simultaneous releases in different track lineups.  There are clearly two separate choirs in use here, with the hymns indeed sung by The Leeds Parish Church Choir of men and boys, and lifted whole from a 1980 recording entitled Songs of Praise - In the English Sacred Choral Tradition with organ accompianment and somewhat shaky singing befitting a small English church choir.  But the Messiah tracks are sung with women instead of trebles, has orchestral backing, and is sung in German!   I have nothing but good to say concerning the Messiah portion - clean, precise singing, good blend between chorus and orchestra, crisp diction and generally propulsive tempos, this is clearly a professional choir on this Messiah - and why Twenty20 Records, the label who released this, and the accompanying two albums of similar nature, have chosen to highlight the Leeds Choir participation over the anonymous, and superior Messiah choir and orchestra, is beyond my understanding.  My only critique of this recording is the distant sound captured, with the singing and playing not as immediate as I would prefer.  In addition to the two recordings featuring both Choirs in somewhat different formats, there is a third recording which pairs the Messiah choruses with a somewhat strident reading of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite, and credited to The London Pops Orchestra and is, to my mind, the best companion to the Messiah portion.
